Alum History

The Egyptians mined alum as a naturally occuring mineral in the oases of Dakhla and Kharga, in the desert west of the River Nile and the landscape is honeycombed with ancient mines. The Egyptians did not start to use alum themselves until around the time of Tutankhamen, roughly 1000 years later.

Littlebeck Alum Works, Littlebeck

The process of mining alum at Littlebeck was to heap the mined alum shale into large mounds. They were then fired in a clamp made up of a brushwood heap 3-4 feet high, upon which the alum deposits were piled, again 3-4 feet high. Once the firing began more alum and brushwood were added until reaching up to 60-90 feet high and 200 feet in diameter.
